What is Rider Switch?

Rider Switch is Disney’s free service that helps families with children who don’t meet height requirements or who don’t to ride stay together and experience all attractions. It works by allowing those who want to ride join the queue while an adult remains with children who don’t meet height requirements or don’t want to ride. That adult is then given what is effectively a lightning lane pass to join the queue line using the Lightning Lane.

Rider Switch is:

  • Free

  • You don’t need to plan in advance to use it, just show up on the day, head to your ride and let the Cast Member at the front of the ride know you would like to use it

  • You don’t need a Lightning Lane to use it

  • No booking required

  • Use it at all rides with height requirements and a couple more

Rider Switch is used:

  • Across select rides in every Disney theme park

  • With all types of Lightning Lanes.

Who can use Rider Switch?

Disney state that Rider Switch can be used by the following guests:

  • Children not meeting height requirements or children who do not want to ride but cannot be left alone outside of the queue line

  • A guest with a service animal who does not wish to leave the animal in a kennel provided

  • Someone “unable to experience the queue based on the nature or condition of the queue at a particular attraction in light of the circumstances and the Guest’s specific needs”.

It is at a Cast Members discretion to award it in the third instance, so always be nice to the Cast Members. We have always found that Cast Members are really helpful when it comes to using Rider Switch.

Using Rider Switch: Step-By-Step

Rider Switch is a fairly easy system to get to grips with; here’s a quick walk-through of what you’ll need to do.

Step 1

Approach the ride entrance, check that Rider Switch is available with the Cast Member at the entrance to the ride and let them know you want to use Rider Switch. We advise you to look for the Cast Member with the i-pad as they will make the arrangements for you.

They’ll give you a special pass for ‘Rider Switch entitlement’ that allows your group to split into two, bit only one adult is able to wait with the non-riding people. The Cast Members expect everyone else to ride together.

Step 2

The first group, head in to the queue to go on the ride. The other adult, Group 2, waits with the little one/s who aren’t riding. You can grab a drink or a snack.

Step 3

After the first group have enjoyed the attraction, the second adult can ride, entering using the Lightning Lane to reduce wait times. They will need to show the cast member the Rider Switch Entitlement pass they got in Step 1 to access the queue line.

How Long After Can You Go Back To Ride?

Although we have heard of people going back hours later, and being let on with the pass. We do advise heading back within an hour and using the system as it was intended by Disney.

Rides with Rider Switch

How Rider Switch Works With Lightning Lane?

You can use Rider Switch with all types of Lightning Lanes:

  • Lightning Lane Single Pass

  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass

  • Lightning Lane Premier Pass

When you arrive at the entrance to the attraction, make sure your whole party is together and tell the Cast Member you'd like to use Rider Switch. They'll divide your group into two parties. Just like they would if you didn’t have a Lightning Lane.

Group 1 rides first using the Lightning Lane, while Group 2 waits outside with the child who isn't riding. Before Group 1 heads in, the Cast Member will scan the Magic Bands or park tickets for the riders in Group 2. This allows them to return through the Lightning Lane as soon as the first group finishes.

One important thing to remember when using Lightning Lane and Rider Switch: everyone who plans to ride must already have a Lightning Lane for that attraction, otherwise Rider Switch won't work with the Lightning Lane entrance.

Using Lightning Lane with Rider Switch is a great way to reduce long wait times, especially on busy days. If you aren’t sure whether you need a Lightning Lane, especially if you have a 7- or 14-Day Magic Ticket have a read of Do UK visitors need Lightning Lanes with a Magic Ticket.

Can a Child Ride Twice With Rider Switch?

Usually a child can ride twice with Rider Switch, and this is one of the reasons families love using it, but it is at Cast Member discretion, not part of the rules.

When your group is split into two parties, Disney usually allows one additional rider to join the second group. In many families, that extra rider is an older child or sibling who wants to experience the attraction again. They will not do this for adults.

Here's how it typically works:

  • Group 1 rides first (for example, one parent and an older child).

  • Group 2 waits outside with the younger child who isn't riding.

  • Once Group 1 exits the ride, Group 2 returns through the Lightning Lane entrance. At this point, the older child can usually join them and ride again.

For older kids, this often feels like a bonus, they get to enjoy the attraction twice while younger siblings sit it out. It also helps keep everyone happy, which can make a big difference on a long park day.

Returning UK Visitors: A Rule Change

If you went to Disney World before 2021 Rider Switch was a little bit different as more people could wait to ride a second time in Party 2. Since 16th July 2021 that changed, only one additional person can wait with the person waiting with children in Group 2 and use the Lightning Lane entry Rider Switch offers.

Before it was almost a guarantee that a second older child would get 2 rides on an attraction if they wanted, but this is not a guarantee. With that said this rule change gave Cast Members a level of discretion on who can ride, so it is not always rigidly enforced. We know of lots of times where older children have still enjoyed this double ride hack. But just be aware that if you haven’t been to Disney World for a while, this is the way Rider Switch works.

Do Both Parents Get to Ride?

Yes, both parents can ride, which is exactly why Disney offers Rider Switch.

Without it, one parent would have to skip the attraction entirely or queue again after the first parent rides. With Rider Switch, Disney allows adults to take turns while someone stays with the child who can't ride.

This system means both adults get to experience the ride without waiting twice, which is especially helpful for attractions with long queues like TRON Lightcycle Run or Avatar Flight of Passage.

For many families visiting from the UK, Rider Switch is one of the easiest ways to make sure no one misses out on the biggest rides, even when travelling with toddlers or younger children.

Do You Need to Book Rider Switch in Advance?

No, Rider Switch does not need to be booked in advance. This is the beauty of it; it offers families that flexibility in planning that you need when you have children with you.

You simply request it when you arrive at the attraction. Make sure your whole party is together at the ride entrance, then tell the Cast Member you'd like to use Rider Switch. They'll set everything up and scan the tickets or Magic Bands for the group waiting outside.

It's also worth knowing that Rider Switch doesn't appear in the My Disney Experience app, so you won't find it listed with Lightning Lane bookings or virtual queues. Everything is handled in person at the attraction entrance. Because of this, Rider Switch is very easy to use on the day, and it's a helpful option for families who decide at the last minute that a child is too small or the child doesn't want to ride.

Tips for Using Rider Switch

Rider Switch is a really free helpful service for UK families, To get the most out of here are a couple of tips:

  • It can be used throughout the day, including at peak times.

  • Use it to give toddlers a break while one adult queues with the rest of the group. A time out with some one on one time for a drink or snack somewhere cool can give a young child much needed down time.

Easy Mistakes To Avoid With Rider Switch

Disney has so much to offer and so many great options for families to navigate wait times, but sometimes it is just overwhelming and mistakes happen.

  • Assuming it’s got to be booked in advance or that you have to use the app to use it. It’s the only Disney queueing service that is completely face-to-face and needs no planning.

  • Forgetting that all Lightning Lane rules apply.

  • Trying to use Rider Switch without taking your whole party to the ride.
